The power of AI in medical diagnostics

By Nathan, CTO

The healthcare industry faces enormous challenges: the demand for care is growing, while there is a shortage of specialists and the administrative burden continues to grow. Fortunately, artificial intelligence (AI) offers a promising solution. AI is increasingly being used in medical diagnostics to support doctors, reduce errors and make diagnoses faster and more accurate. But how exactly does it work? And what does it mean for the future of healthcare?

AI as a smart assistant for doctors

AI systems can analyse vast amounts of medical data in a fraction of the time taken by a doctor. This does not mean AI replaces doctors, but it does mean it helps them with:

  • Image recognition: AI can analyse X-rays, MRI scans and CT scans at lightning speed and detect subtle abnormalities that even an experienced specialist might miss.
  • Pattern recognition: By comparing thousands of medical records, AI can recognise patterns that may indicate diseases such as cancer or cardiovascular disease.
  • Decision support: AI provides doctors with valuable insights and suggestions based on the latest medical knowledge, allowing them to make more informed decisions.

Faster and more accurate diagnoses

Traditional diagnostics take time. A patient sometimes has to wait days or even weeks for a result. With AI, this time can be drastically reduced. For example:

  • Pathology: AI can analyse biopsies and identify cancer cells faster and more accurately than manual methods.
  • Ophthalmology: AI helps in the early detection of eye diseases such as diabetic retinopathy, which can prevent blindness.
  • Dermatology: AI-based apps can scan suspicious skin patches and help doctors diagnose skin cancer.
  • These technologies can not only save lives but also reduce the workload for medical staff.

Helping discover tumour cells with a game

Together with Delft University of Technology and the Netherlands Cancer Institute, the initiative was launched. By playing a game, an artificial intelligence is trained so that it can eventually help pathologists make diagnoses faster and better. With the aim of being able to recognise cancer in people very quickly and offer appropriate and effective treatments.

AI in practice: collaboration is key!

Although AI is promising, it is not a panacea. The success of AI in medical diagnostics depends on collaboration between technology companies, healthcare providers and scientists. Key areas of focus are:

  • Reliability: AI models need to be trained on diverse and representative datasets to ensure accurate results.
  • Ethics and privacy: Medical data processing must comply with strict regulations such as the AVG and NEN-7510.
  • Human control: AI supports doctors, but they remain ultimately responsible for diagnosis and treatment.

The future of AI in healthcare

Developments in AI are advancing rapidly and its applications in the medical world are becoming increasingly sophisticated. In the future, we can even expect personalised AI solutions that fully align diagnoses and treatments with a patient's DNA and medical history.

Innovations such as AI-driven chatbots, predictive analytics and automated reporting will further optimise care. The power of AI lies in its combination with human expertise: doctors will gain super-powerful tools, allowing them to help patients better and faster.
